Religion Code: Christianity for Kids

Religion is an important part of our lives. Traditionally, it is defined as the belief in or worship of a non-human controlling power, such as a god or deity. While there are a number of religions practiced by individuals living around the world, Christianity is, without doubt, one of the largest. Children who are interested in learning more about Christianity should first understand its basic premise. In addition, having a concrete understanding of the founder of Christianity, the beliefs of the religion, and its symbols and rules is important for students of all ages who are interested in learning more about this fascinating faith.

Q: What is Christianity?

A: As suggested by the name, Christianity is a religion in which followers honor and respect Jesus Christ. Currently, Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world, and has around 2.2 billion supporters around the world. Though originally developed in the Holy Land, Christianity has spread to all parts of the globe. Most Christians celebrate the life of Jesus in a church, which may be built in a shape similar to that of a cross. In some cases, churches are built with alters that race the east—or the direction in which the sun rises. While Christians honor Christ year-round, the most important days in the Christian year are Christmas, Easter, and Lent. A number of other, less well-known Christian holidays may also be celebrated each year by individuals living in countries around the globe.

Q: Who Was the Founder of Christianity?

A: So who, exactly, can be credited with the development of the Christian faith? According to most experts, Christianity was founded by Jesus Christ, a man who was born approximately 2,000 years ago in the town of Bethlehem. Jesus is the son of God, and encouraged all individuals of the world to love and show good fellowship to one another. Unfortunately, just 33 years after his birth, Jesus was crucified by the Romans. Though most well-known by the name Jesus Christ, he is also sometimes referred to as the Son of God, Light of the World, Lamb of God, and the Good Sheppard. Most Christians today strive to represent Jesus in their actions and behaviors.

Q: What are Christian Beliefs?

A: There are a number of beliefs that are supported and followed by Christians living in all parts of the world. As noted previously, the most important belief of the Christian faith is that Jesus was fully human, yet born as the son of God. In addition, Christians traditionally believe that Jesus was sent to earth in order to protect humanity from the sins committed by its citizens. Finally, Christians believe that Jesus was tortured and crucified, died on the cross, and rose again three days after his crucification.

Christians also have a number of important beliefs that revolve around the concept of God. Christians believe that God not only made the entire world, but also all the plants, animals, and other components found within it. In addition, Christians believe that while there is only one God, and that He is formed from three distinct “persons,” including the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For most individuals, these beliefs are central to and essential in the concept of Christianity.

Q: What are the Symbols and Guidelines of Christianity?

A: Though there are a number of symbols associated with Christianity, the most common include the cross, upon which Jesus died, and the dove, which is considered to be a symbol of peace. In addition, the fish—which stands for the phrase “Jesus Christ God’s Son Savior—is also an important symbol to Christians living around the world. The guidelines of Christianity revolve around adherence to the Ten Commandments, which were created by God. The Ten Commandments encourage Christians to be respectful towards God, one’s family, and the community in which one lives.
